How to Contact Coastguard Whakatāne
Emergencies Only
In an emergency dial 111 and ask for the Police. On your mobile *500
If you are calling from a vessel at sea and have a VHF radio, call on marine Emergency VHF Channel 16.
Call: “MAYDAY”,”MAYDAY”,”MAYDAY” followed by the VESSEL NAME and LOCATION.
Repeat all of this three times. If possible provide details of the emergency and follow any instructions given. If possible, keep calling until you get a response.
Boat to Coastguard – Routine Calls
Coastguard Whakatāne encourages all boaties to call Coastguard on leaving port and on returning.
Also during the day when moving position.
For all of these calls, contact the Operator on VHF Channel 18.
Coastguard members may use VHF Channel 60 for boat to boat communications

The Coastguard Whakatāne Headquarters building / Communications Centre is located at the Whakatāne Heads, which is found at at the far end of Muriwai Drive.
All visitors are welcome during normal hours to visit the Communications Centre and meet the Operator. You can check out the equipment used and the magnificent view of the Whakatāne River entrance.
We can also cater for community groups or school tours of the premises and the Coastguard Rescue Vessel (CRV) building and the rescue vessel “WHAKATĀNE RESCUE ll”. If you wish to use this facility, please contact the Operator – Ph: 07 3087110, to arrange suitable times. Please give us a reasonable lead time to enable us to organise one of our volunteers to lead the tour for you.
