At 0945hrs the Whakatane Duty Maritime Officer reported a boat had overturned on the Thornton bar.1POB observed swimming to shore.Sea conditions were reasonable with a low tide a SW wind of 15-25 kts and 1m swells.With the POB safely on shore the DMO requested Whakatane Rescue be tasked to remove the boat from the bar.Whakatane Rescue arrived on site at 1100 and pulled the boat off the bar but it was assessed as untowable so the boat was released to drift onto the beach to the East of the bar.Whakatane Rescue returned to port at 1200hrs.
